Romelu Lukaku describes his Chelsea stint as ‘failure’ amid links to Stamford Bridge return… but picks Inter Milan when asked to choose between both clubs because he’s had success in Italy

  • Romelu Lukaku has once again voiced his desire not to leave Inter Milan
  • The Belgian striker was asked to choose between current club and Chelsea
  • The 28-year-old was decisive in picking Inter and wanting to stay at the club
  • Lukaku described his frustrating three year spell at Stamford Bridge as ‘a failure’

Romeu Lukaku has downplayed any move to Chelsea this summer and insisted he is happy at Inter Milan.

The 28-year-old shone for Inter last season as helped lead them to a first Serie A title in over a decade, scoring 24 league goals and 30 in all competitions.

His impressive form has led to reports of a potential move away from Italy this summer, including a return to Stamford Bridge, however when Lukaku was asked to choose between his current employers and the Blues, he was definitive in his answer.

‘Inter. Inter. I have won a title with Inter,’ Lukaku told HLN.

‘That was a childhood dream too. At one team I had success, at the other one it was a failure.’

Lukaku spent three years as Chelsea player between 2011 and 2014 but spent two of those out loan, first at West Brom and then a year later at Everton where he eventually moved permanently.

While the Blues won the Champions League in his first season at the club, the Belgian star was frustrated with his lack of involvement as he failed to make an impact with the first-team.

Andre Villas-Boas was replaced by Di Matteo as Chelsea boss towards the end of that season, and in an interview earlier this season Lukaku revealed his anger at how he was treated by the Portuguese man.

‘Di Matteo told me that I would stay with the group until after the final,’ Lukaku told Het Laatste Nieuws, as reported by AD.

‘He thought everyone should come along, including the ones who were suspended and the few boys who were not in the Champions League squad.

‘I am also grateful to him for that. This win is one of the things I’ve always dreamed about.

‘You want to celebrate something like that with the team at that time. That is nice in itself at the age of nineteen.

‘I am happy for the whole club, but there is one man who took a lot from me: the previous trainer (Villas-Boas). I will never forgive him for that.’

Lukaku continues to be linked with a move this summer, though the apparent availability of fellow forwards Harry Kane and Erling Haaland have complicated the picture somewhat.

Speaking earlier this month, the forward was adamant he is staying at Inter, and revealed he has already held positive talks with new boss Simone Inzaghi ahead of next season.
