THE VIEW FROM ITALY: Even the pizzerias were strangely empty as a nation ravaged by Covid held its breath, but Roberto Mancini’s daring side exploded Euro 2020 to life in a riot of sound, light and blue
In this fantastic Italy side there are no irreplaceable players and every athlete chosen by Roberto Mancini is the protagonist within a young and strong team that seems to have all the qualities to be able to win the European Championship.
As always in Italy when the national team plays there is absolute silence in every city and the streets are empty as early as at 8pm while the sound of the shutters being closed marks the steps along the road.
Walking down the street you can see buildings and apartment buildings with the lights on inside the kitchens, the windows open and all family members talking loudly in front of the television while waiting for the game to start.
Italy began their Euro 2020 campaign in style and laid down a marker after beating Turkey 3-0
There was an Italian superstition that was respected and the country celebrated its debut in Europe with the usual superstition before the match.
In Napoli at the stroke of 21 there was a riot of sounds and lights in the buildings, the city was deserted and even the restaurants were strangely empty despite the post Covid restart.
There were televisions on in the centre of the pizzerias and bars at high volume. There is much anticipation for the return of the Italian national team and for the great adventure of Euro 2021 which begins in Rome.
Italy had never won 3-0 in a debut match of a European championship – a great statistic that establishes the greatness and strength of a team that only 3 years ago seemed to have reached the end of its glorious history.
Italy have proved their great strength with 28 consecutive positive results – just 2 games from the statistical record of Vittorio Pozzo’s legendary Italy.

The 3-0 win over Turkey was a very clear message for all the fearsome opponents of the Italian national team.
England, France and Belgium will also have to deal with the Italian national team that will do everything to be able to win this European Championship – trying to replace what was missing from 1968.
Italy gave a high quality performance, especially from a tactical point of view. The squad did not get caught up in the frenzy of scoring immediately and did not allow the Turkish side to break through.
Mancini selected the best players for the job and even found the courage to leave Federico Chiesa on the bench despite the criticisms from both the media and fans.
