Jamie Redknapp has recalled his nightmare first day at Liverpool after arriving as one of the most expensive teenagers in 1991 – telling of how he slipped over while attempting a pass in training.
The former midfielder – now a pundit with Sky Sports – cost the Reds around £350,000 after joining from Bournemouth, a pricey fee at the time, and while he would go on to enjoy a memorable career at Anfield, he endured a forgettable opening session with some of his ‘heroes’.
Redknapp was brushing shoulders with the likes of John Barnes and Ian Rush and was looking to showcase his ability and justify his price tag, but it all went wrong as he went for a tumble while trying a simple pass.

Speaking on A League of Their Own, Redknapp was asked by host Romesh Ranganathan what it was like to join a new club for the first time, and Redknapp took a look back at his awkward moment at Melwood.
‘My first day at Liverpool was terrifying,’ he admitted. ‘So I signed as a 17-year-old, the most expernsive teenager at the time in the country. Liverpool had John Barnes, Ian Rush, Steve McMahon, Ronnie Whelan – heroes of mine that were all on my wall in Bournemouth.
‘It was a freezing cold day – snow everywhere, we couldn’t actually get onto the pitch. So we we went onto this cinder area. I remember the ball coming to me and I wanted to show I’ve got a little bit.

‘When someone passed me the ball, I went to pass it back, went a**e over t*t, legs up in the air and everyone was shouting “How much? How much are you costing?!”
His story left the studio in hysterics, with guests including Jonathan Ross, David Walliams and Joel Dommett giggling at Redknapp’s stroke of misfortune.
Redknapp enjoyed better times after that embarrassing start to his Liverpool career as he went on to play 308 times for the club, scoring 41 goals. He won the League Cup in 1995 and the UEFA Super Cup in 2001 before he moved back down south and was sold to Tottenham in 2002.
He is now one of the most recognisable pundits after being forced to retire at the age of 31
He featured 49 times in three seasons at the north London outfit, and his struggles with injuries followed him to thwart his progress. He later linked up with his father Harry with Southampton after starting his career together at Bournemouth.
After just one season on the south coast, he hung up his boots in 2005 after being unable to shake off his constant fitness woes – at the age of just 31.
Redknapp has since become one of the most recognisable pundits in the UK and is often seen giving his take on all of the top Premier League games and players.
