Tom Hardy has spoken out on the possibility of Venom 3, more sequels beyond this, and his thought process on doing a franchise.
In 2018, Tom Hardy’s Venom was released and was not well received by critics. To the shock of all, the film went on to earn over $800M at the worldwide box office. A sequel was quickly put into development which was released earlier this month. The movie was overall better received by critics with many negative reviews admitting that, at the very least, the film is fun. During the movie’s opening weekend, Venom: Let There Be Carnage had the biggest weekend opening of any film during the Covid-19 pandemic. The question now is what does the future of the franchise hold?
Earlier today, Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis revealed that a crossover with Spider-Man was happening, although it is not clear when or how it would come about. Star Tom Hardy, on the other hand, recently spoke about the potential for the future of the franchise in terms of a continuous story. While speaking to Digital Spy, the actor spoke about his train of thought, stating that the first three installments should all be one story, with other installments being a secondary priority:
“These things [usually] come in threes. If there’s going to be a new one – and they depend heavily on the success of each individual one, so you can’t count on them ever happening again – every one has got to be as if it was the last one. But I think it’s really important, if you go into something, thinking that one, two and three are the same… the same story, the same film. So that you don’t surprise yourself by being caught out by suddenly having to do a third from nowhere. There’s got to be some continuity into a third and fourth and fifth, and if somebody says ‘no’, that’s fine. Let it go, and you move on to something else.”
Here is the synopsis for Venom: Let There Be Carnage:
“After finding a host body in investigative reporter Eddie Brock, the alien symbiote must face a new enemy, Carnage, the alter ego of serial killer Cletus Kasady.”
Directed by Andy Serkis from a script written by Kelly Marcel, the film stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, Stephen Graham, and Woody Harrelson.
