Jon Bernthal Says Potential MCU Return Should Be Dark

Jon Bernthal says that a potential return as The Punisher for the MCU should be dark and gritty.

One of the most beloved shows to come out of Netflix and Marvel’s partnership was Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher series. The character originally made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Daredevil‘s second season, before getting his own spin-off. The Frank Castle spin-off series was notably dark and mature, which made the show immensely popular among mature crowds.

The future of the character remains unknown, especially after Netflix canceled their slate of MCU shows. There have been recent rumors and reports that suggest characters like Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin will return as versions of their characters in upcoming MCU projects, sparking hope that the likes of The Punisher, Jessica Jons, and Luke Cage can return one away or another.

In a recent interview with Forbes, Jon Bernthal opened up about what a potential return to the MCU would look like for The Punisher.

“As far as going on in the future, it’s a character that I really feel like I have sort of in my bones and in my heart. I’m really grateful that I had the opportunity, and what sort of happens in the future isn’t about whether they want to do it or not again.”

“I don’t really prescribe anything to those kinds of decisions. It’s just about, if they do do it, are we gonna be able to do it right? Is it gonna be dark enough? Is it gonna be gritty enough? Are we gonna give the fans, and the folks that this character means so much to, are we gonna give them what they deserve? And if the answer is yes, man oh man, I would love that.”

Nothing is confirmed for Bernthal’s anti-hero, but it would be interesting to see the character return to the franchise, especially if the rumors of Cox and D’Onofrio returning manifest. With the multiverse now a core component of the Marvel franchise, it’s easier than ever to fold different variations of fan-favorite characters to return, without necessarily contradicting the rules of the universe that have been set up.
