Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy insists his Ballon d’Or snub is NOT ‘an injustice’ despite the decision angering several of his team-mates… as he says missing out ‘motivates’ him to ‘work and perform’

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has insisted missing the cut for this year’s list of Ballon d’Or nominees is ‘not an injustice’ – despite his absence angering team-mates.

The 30-man shortlist for the prestigious award was revealed earlier this month, with highly-rated stopper Mendy one of the biggest names to have not featured.

Mendy has enjoyed a stunning start at the club, having won the Champions League last season and starred when helping Chelsea also finish in the top four.

He pulled off several eye-catching saves in the hard-fought victory at Brentford at the weekend, in a performance which raised question marks over the omission.

But Mendy has remained level-headed despite the slight blow, and instead chose to focus on the sheer number of people who have since been in touch.

‘I saw the list at the same time as many people, and I got a lot of messages from people close to me and from some I didn’t even know, so I was really touched by this wave of messages I got, whether it be calls or on social media,’ he told Canal+.

‘It’s something that’s really huge, it really touched me to a point I wasn’t expecting.

‘All this affection and recognition is what pushes me to work and continue to get titles with club and country. It’s just happiness and motivation.

‘Do I think it’s an injustice? No, I wouldn’t use that word. It’s something that motivates me to go forward, to work and to perform at club level and with my country.

‘As I said after the game with the national team, it’s the journalists’ freedom of vote and expression, and they vote honourably and conscientiously.’

A number of his club-mates have spoken out to savage Mendy’s absence from the shortlist, with Antonio Rudiger sharing his surprise on social media.

Thiago Silva also believes the ‘keeper should have been included, as does Sadio Mane, Mendy’s team-mate with Senegal and a former nominee himself.

Liverpool forward Mane said the decision to leave Mendy out was ‘inadmissible’.

Five Chelsea players in total have made the list, however, with Jorginho among the bookies’ favourites after his trophy-laden campaign last season.

Cesar Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount are also named – with Romelu Lukaku, who starred for Inter Milan before moving to west London, joining them.

Mendy has kept 20 clean sheets in his 38 Premier League appearances so far, including four shutouts this year to help spark Chelsea’s title challenge.

No goalkeeper has made the Ballon d’Or’s top three since Bayern Munich custodian Manuel Neuer in 2014, although Gianluigi Donnarumma is now in the running.
