London 2012 long jump champion Greg Rutherford’s attempt to make the British bobsleigh squad is not a publicity stunt, according to the man poised to steer the sled in the Winter Olympics next February.

Rutherford has switched sports at the age of 34 and has made rapid progress on ice.

He has been selected for Lamin Deen’s group, who are fighting for qualification to the four-man bobsleigh.

And Deen says he has been astonished by Rutherford’s progress. ‘At first, I was doubtful in the timeframe that he could make it, not just physically but everything that comes with it,’ he said.

‘Greg went to work with the coaches and within a week he’d learned how to perform in a two-man sled. I was gobsmacked! Usually it takes four or five sessions. First session he got it and just kept getting better. I thought, “Wow, I’ve never seen anything like it”.

‘People thought it was a publicity stunt but it isn’t. To have someone who has achieved so much, it inspires even the veterans.’

Meanwhile, Team GB chef de mission Georgie Harland is confident they will travel with a fully vaccinated group and avoid a 21-day quarantine. ‘Most on the long list are vaccinated and I have full confidence,’ she said.
