The herd – which included the calf’s mother – were near a pump house when the fateful incident occurred.

In a video taken from the scene, the mother elephant can be seen firstly nudging the calf with her foot to try and make him move – but his body is motionless.

The elephant then uses her trunk to try to wake him up by moving him – but the calf ends up being rolled onto his back with his legs in the air.

The mother, appearing to realise that her calf is dead, gently nuzzles the youngster with her trunk before standing by the body.

She then slowly edges away from the calf – but does not turn her back on her child as she steps back.

The calf came into contact with an electric wire and died from electrocution.

Forest and Wildlife officials came to investigate the scene and found three other elephants guarding the dead elephant.

The officials found a live wire connected to a borewell, which they believe the elephant came into contact with – and possibly chewed.

An autopsy is underway, while a probe has been launched to investigate the matter fully.
