Steve Diamond will end a year-long exile from club rugby next week when he is due to be unveiled as a consultant at Worcester.

The 53-year-old stood down from his post as director of rugby at Sale late last year, for personal reasons, after spending close to a decade in charge of the Cheshire club.

He enjoyed an extended break from the game, but in recent months Diamond has been seeking a role in the Premiership.

Last month, there were reports linking him with Bath – the West Country club who are languishing at the foot of the league table after seven consecutive defeats at the start of this season.

However, despite ex-Saracens chief executive Edward Griffiths being asked to oversee a review of Stuart Hooper’s management team at The Rec, as yet there have been no changes made.

Instead, Diamond is being brought in by Worcester to add experience and know-how to their rugby hierarchy.

South African Alan Solomons is the director of rugby at Sixways but he is believed to be out of contract at the end of this season and head coach Jonathan Thomas has assumed day-to-day control of the Warriors first team.

While Worcester are struggling, with six defeats in their eight Premiership games so far in this campaign, a convincing recent victory over Sale – with two tries from summer signing and Lions wing Duhan van der Merwe – showed signs of upward potential.

Diamond will be able to assist Thomas with the task of reviving the West Midlands club, freed from the threat of relegation, at least in the short term.

If the arrangement works well, the new recruit may emerge as a possible successor to Solomons, beyond the end of this season.
