‘Wanted – Goals’: Barcelona are ‘looking for more firepower with January moves for Timo Werner and Edinson Cavani being considered’… but a swoop for Raheem Sterling is ‘becoming less and less likely’
- Spanish giants Barcelona are reportedly on the hunt for more firepower up front
- The Catalan side have struggled for goals this season and want to fix the issue
- Summer signing Sergio Aguero may retire after a cardiac arrhythmia diagnosis
- And new manager Xavi is said to be eyeing up Timo Werner or Edinson Cavani
- However, a move for Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling is ‘drifting further away’
Barcelona are desperate for attacking reinforcements in January and are considering moves for Timo Werner and Edinson Cavani, according to reports in Spain.
The Spanish giants have struggled for goals this season and lie seventh in LaLiga, outside the European qualification spots.
And according to Mundo Deportivo, new manager Xavi could turn to Chelsea forward Werner or Manchester United striker Cavani in the upcoming winter transfer window to fix his lack of firepower up front.

Mundo’s front page reads: ‘Wanted – Goals,’ with captions adding ‘Barca want firepower in the winter market but there’s internal debate: (whether to buy) a No 9 or a winger’ and ‘Werner and Cavani fit the bill, while Sterling becomes less likely’.
The Catalan side are not scoring enough goals, with just 22 goals in 18 matches in all competitions so far this season, and their Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Benfica on Tuesday.
Summer signing Sergio Aguero is considering retirement after a cardiac arrhythmia diagnosis, Memphis Depay is delivering but is more suited to playing out wide, Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele have been beset by injuries and there are serious doubts about the ability of Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong to score consistently.
Therefore club legend Xavi, appointed earlier this month, is reportedly weighing up moves for the Premier League duo – although Cavani, 34, has only scored once and Werner, 25, only once in the Premier League this campaign.
A move for Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling is said to be more and more unlikely
There is also said to be internal debates at the club regarding whether to prioritise a central striker or a wide player, with Xavi thought to prefer the latter, but others keen on a ‘matador’ like Uruguayan Cavani.
The 126-cap international has barely played this season for United and could be willing to leave, although his prospects may change under new interim manager Ralf Rangnick, while Werner has been largely sidelined by £98m signing Romelu Lukaku.
Barcelona are reportedly considering younger players like Basel’s Arthur Cabral, 23, who has 22 goals in 20 games this season, or River Plate’s Julian Alvarez, who topped the league’s scoring charts with 17 as his side became champions on Thursday.
Widemen Jesse Lingard and Bryan Gil are also mentioned as options, with Dani Olmo and Karim Adeyemi unlikely, but given the club’s £1.15billion debt, they will need players to leave first and will likely need to sign players on loans with options to buy.
