Saul Niguez is targeting the international break to revive his Chelsea loan spell

Struggling Saul Niguez is targeting the international break to revive his Chelsea loan spell as he aims to follow Kepa and Ross Barkley’s lead and force his way back into Thomas Tuchel’s plans

  •  Saul Niguez joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid on a loan spell in summer
  •  However, the 26-year-old has featured just five times in all competitions so far
  •  The midfielder now hopes the international break can help revive his loan spell
  • He is one of only a handful of senior players left at Cobham over the break

Saul Niguez will use the international break to try to revive his Chelsea loan as he has no intention of returning to Atletico Madrid in January.

The 26-year-old had fallen down the pecking order under Diego Simeone and signed for Chelsea on a temporary basis in summer with the Blues having the option to buy him outright for a fee of around £30million at the end of the season.

But the Spain international has struggled to make an impact at Chelsea, making just one substitute appearance since his dismal first-half debut against Aston Villa.

And, the Premier League leaders are considering cutting his loan spell short and sending the midfielder back to Atletico Madrid in January, according to Marca.

But, despite becoming increasingly frustrated with the situation, Saul is eager to stay and fight for his place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, according to The Telegraph.

The midfielder is understood to have settled into life in England well and gets along with his Chelsea team-mates, in particular his countrymen captain Cesar Azpilicueta, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcos Alonso.

Saul could look to follow in the footsteps of Kepa and Ross Barkley who have been brought in from the cold by Tuchel.

The Chelsea boss has assured Saul that he will get chances and, with the Blues still in all three domestic competitions and the Champions League and Mateo Kovacic sidelined, his opportunity could arise after the international break.

Saul has not been called up to the Spain squad, meaning he is one of only a handful of senior players who has remained at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground during the break.

He will aim to work intensively with Tuchel to get up to scratch ready for the return of Chelsea’s Premier League campaign against Leicester on November 20.
