Manchester United’s Champions League tie against Young Boys next week will go ahead at Old Trafford after the Swiss club were granted an exemption from quarantine rules.

There was a danger of United’s final Group F tie being switched to a neutral country because Young Boys would have had to isolate for 10 days on their return to Switzerland and been unable to fulfil their domestic fixtures against Sion and Basel.

But United’s opponents announced on Wednesday that they will be allowed to travel to the UK without the need for quarantine.

A statement read: ‘The BSC Young Boys has received a special permit from the Canton of Bern for away matches in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Youth League.

‘Thus, players and staff of the teams do not have to go into 10-day quarantine after returning from the UEFA Champions League match Manchester United-YB on Wednesday 8 December.

‘The BSC Young Boys points out that the players and staff will be in a bubble strictly separated from the environment from Tuesday 7 December and the departure via the charter flight to Manchester until the return journey on Thursday 9 December.

‘This concept has already proven its worth on the five European trips to the away games so far this season.

‘The BSC YB would like to thank the Canton of Bern for its flexibility and the exemption and will do everything in its power to continue to serve as a role model.’

United have already progressed to the Champions League knockout stage following their win over Villarreal last week, but Young Boys can still claim a Europa League spot by finishing third in the group.
